Bent But Not Broken is a heartfelt journey of a girl and her family as they navigate the healthcare system from diagnosis to surgery and beyond. Follow them as they use their own words in blog posts and through an emotional and gripping narrative that puts you right by their side. All the ups, downs, challenges, and successes of the experience changed their lives and taught them that compassion and love build strong communities, even stronger families, and that true strength comes from the most unlikely sources.

For the Butters family, the punch that knocked the wind out of them was a diagnosis of severe idiopathic scoliosis for their eleven-year-old daughter Avery. The only viable treatment option was spinal fusion surgery. It was a terrifying prospect to stare down. Frustrated with the lack of information on what the family would actually experience, Avery’s mother, Jodi, started a family blog.

It was there that Avery, Jodi, and Andrew would share their thoughts and experiences about the journey in real-time. Jodi was determined that if there were other families searching for this information her family would be able to provide it.

When it was all said and done and the blog came to its rightful conclusion, the writer in Andrew felt that since the blog was so successful at spreading the message then surely there were other ways to help spread the word and share lessons that even applied beyond Avery’s scoliosis.

Andrew Butters is a 40-something married father of two living in New Brunswick, Canada and he will tell you that his first published work was Losing Vern as part of the Orange Karen: A Tribute to a Warrior anthology. In reality, it was a 500-word anecdote about the time he lit himself on fire. That story made it into the third installment of the Darwin Awards books.

Fire is not the only foe for Andrew. He has received several severe concussions and a few “minor” ones, the last coming in the summer of 2011. It goes without saying that he is one hundred percent on board with head protection and brain health.

Not all his distinctions are as dubious as appearing in a Darwin Awards book. There was the time he participated in a trick on stage with Penn & Teller. He had a solid minute of screen time on the Super Dave Osborne Show. He scored a game-winning goal at Maple Leaf Gardens and even did an art swap with filmmaker Kevin Smith. He was also given a whole three seconds of non-speaking airtime in a TV commercial, and who could forget when he appeared as a fighting homeless man in a rap video.

He writes, creates, eats snacks, blogs, toils over his next novel, creates videos, is a huge fan of golf, science, EQUALITY, and the Oxford comma. Andrew sometimes lets his love of attention override common sense. You can find evidence of this at his website, http://potatochipmath.com.

When my daughter was diagnosed with Scoliosis I have no idea where to look, or indeed how serious the condition was/is. There seems to be quite a few medical books on the subject, but I wanted an easy read that told me what I (as a parent) should be expecting. Imagine my surprise to discover that the family in the book live 30 minutes away from me, had the procedure done at the same hospital by the same surgeon we will have!

My wife and I both read this book in less than 2 days.

This book is really quite amazing. It chronicles one family's journey dealing with scoliosis. I love that this book, based on a blog with some of Andrew's further comments, is so candid and open. I enjoyed reading the feelings, fears and observations of Andrew, his wife Jodi and their amazing kid Avery who has more strength than just about any kid I know. My daughter has health challenges and I can relate to some of the feelings the family has dealing with a scary diagnosis. I never had to wait out a scary surgery. The best part of this book for me, was Chapter 12, Avery talking about her thoughts and feelings and wanting to be shrunk back down to being six years old. I recommend this book to any parent, to any family dealing with a scoliosis diagnosis or even a family working through a child with health challenges. I am so thankful they shared this journey through their blog and this delightful book.

Make sure you have a box of tissues handy while reading this one. I don't care how manly or "macho" you might claim to be. Andrew is the kind of parent I aspire to be. So much love in this family. When placed against some of the most frightening challenges parents can ever expect, the Butters clan chose strength through humor, compassion and love rather than allow themselves to be ground down by their adversity. Their writing places you in the moments with them both tender and terrifying. A roller coaster ride of emotions well worth the ride. "Ben But Not Broken" is a beautiful story all the more poignant because it is real.
